Product Design Lead

Nora
Ellinger

I lead design teams that turn dense, technical products into something people actually finish using.

In short

Twelve years in product design, the last six leading teams. I work where the product is complicated and the stakes are high — payments, logistics, regulated platforms. My job is to make the hard parts feel obvious, and to leave behind a team and a system that keep working after I do.

Experience

  1. 2022 — now

Product Design Lead · Kestrel Payments

    Berlin

Lead a team of six across onboarding, risk and merchant tooling. Own the design direction for everything a merchant touches before their first transaction.

    • Rebuilt merchant onboarding end to end; time-to-first-payment dropped from 9 days to 2.
    • Introduced a weekly evidence review that replaced opinion-led design debates.
    • Grew the team from two to six and set the levelling framework used company-wide.
  2. 2020 — 2022

    Design Systems Lead · Northline

    Vienna

Built and shipped the design system used by four product teams, then handed it over with governance that survived my departure.

    • Shipped 62 components with accessibility built into the contract, not bolted on.
    • Cut new-screen build time by roughly 40% across four teams.
    • Wrote the contribution model still in use today.
  3. 2017 — 2020

Senior Product Designer · Ferry Mobility

    Vienna

Owned booking and ticketing for a regional transport operator moving from counters to digital.

    • Redesigned the booking flow for infrequent, non-technical travellers.
    • Took mobile completion from 41% to 73% over three releases.
    • Ran the first accessibility audit the company had ever commissioned.
  4. 2014 — 2017

    Product Designer · Studio Halden

    Vienna

Agency work across fintech, health and public sector clients. Where I learned to make a case, not just a screen.

    • Shipped 20+ client projects from research through to handover.
    • Built the studio's first reusable interface kit.

Selected work

Three projects where the interesting decision was not visual.

Kestrel Payments · 2023

Nine days to two

Merchant onboarding took nine days and lost a third of applicants on the way. We rebuilt it around what actually blocked people, not around the compliance form.

Northline · 2021

A system that outlived me

Four product teams, four interpretations of the same brand. The interesting part was never the components — it was the contribution model that kept them honest after I left.

Ferry Mobility · 2019

Booking for people who do it twice a year

A regional operator moving from ticket counters to an app, with a passenger base that had never used one. Designing for infrequency is a different problem to designing for power users.

How I work

Evidence over opinion

Watching five people fail at something ends an argument faster than any deck. I bring the recording, not the assertion.

Sequence is the design

Most bad flows are not badly drawn. They ask the right questions in the wrong order, to the wrong person, at the wrong moment.

Leave the system, not the screen

The work is only finished when the team can extend it without me. Documentation and governance are part of the deliverable.
